FAQs
What is a chemical peel and how does it work?
A chemical peel is a corrective skin treatment that uses an acid solution to exfoliate layers of skin. This process stimulates cell turnover and reveals fresher, smoother, and more even-toned skin underneath. The strength of the peel determines how deep it goes—some work only on the surface, while others reach deeper into the dermis. Peels can improve a variety of skin concerns like dullness, fine lines, acne, and discoloration. The exact results and downtime depend on the type of peel used.
What’s the difference between light, medium, and deep peels?
Light peels, like glycolic or mandelic acid, exfoliate just the top layer of skin and typically involve little to no downtime. Medium peels, such as those with trichloroacetic acid (TCA), go deeper and may require a few days of visible peeling and recovery. Deep peels reach the lower layers of the dermis and are often used for severe sun damage, deeper wrinkles, or scars—but they also require more downtime and carry greater risk. The deeper the peel, the more intensive the results and recovery. Consult with your skin professional to have them assess which level of peel is appropriate based on your skin goals.
Are chemical peels safe for all skin types and tones?
Chemical peels can be safe for all skin types and tones when performed by an experienced professional using the right formulation. However, people with medium to deep skin tones are at a slightly higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation if the peel is too aggressive or improperly managed. Gentler peels and pre-treatment with pigment inhibitors can help reduce this risk. A personalized approach is key to safe and effective results. Always consult with a skin professional who understands how to treat diverse skin types and tones.
How should I prepare my skin before a chemical peel?
Prepping your skin before a peel helps improve the outcome and reduce potential side effects. Firstly, it is recommended to stop active products like retinoids and exfoliants for at least 3 days before your chemical peel treatment and use the NeoGenesis Cleanser, Recovery and Barrier Renewal Cream in that order (with sunscreen of course, during the day) for at least two weeks prior to prepare and strengthen your skin. Avoid sun exposure and waxing prior at least two weeks prior to your appointment. Always follow your skin professional’s pre and post peel instructions for the best results.
Can I get a peel if I have active acne or a breakout?
Light chemical peels, like those with salicylic or mandelic acid, are often used to help clear active breakouts by unclogging pores and reducing inflammation. However, if your skin is broken, your skin barrier is damaged, or skin is infected, your skin professional may recommend waiting until your skin is more stable. Peels can be part of a long-term acne treatment plan, but timing and peel choice matter. Always consult with a professional who can assess your skin in person before proceeding.
How long does it take to recover from a chemical peel?
Recovery time depends on the depth of the peel and can be significantly reduced when using NeoGenesis products twice daily at home. Light peels typically have minimal downtime—often redness or dryness resolves in 1–3 days. Medium peels often involve some visible peeling that lasts 5–7 days, while deeper peels can require up to two weeks to a month of healing and skin shedding. During recovery, it’s important to follow aftercare instructions, keep the skin moisturized, and avoid sun exposure. The more intensive the peel, the more important it is to protect your skin as it regenerates.
